Onychomycosis or ringworm of the nails is a superficial nail infection that alters the color and thickness of the nails.
It can affect both fingernails and toenails.
It can be caused by three types of fungi: dermatophytes (mainly of the genera Trichophyton and Microsporum), yeasts (mainly Candida Albicans), and non-dermatophyte molds.
The Diode laser emits energy that can penetrate the skin surface to a depth of 3 to 5mm and coagulate the tissues, increasing the temperature up to 60 degrees Celsius and to a depth of 3mm2. Dermatophytes can be eliminated and this is how the diode laser is an effective treatment to end onychomycosis.
